Yellowstone National Park

The West Entrance is the closest gateway of any park entrance to Yellowstone's famous geyser basins, which is the single best reason to stay on this side of the park.

  • Old Faithful — about 30 miles in, roughly 45 minutes of driving

  • Grand Prismatic Spring at Midway Geyser Basin — about 25 miles, 35 minutes

  • Norris Geyser Basin — about 28 miles

  • Madison Junction — 14 miles, where the road splits north and south

Park traffic peaks between roughly 10am and 3pm, so an early start makes a real difference. Being able to walk to the entrance means you can be watching a geyser erupt before most day-trippers have finished breakfast.

Wildlife Watching

Bison, elk, moose, bighorn sheep, wolves, and both black and grizzly bears live in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Dawn and dusk are the productive hours, and patience beats mileage almost every time.

If you'd rather have a guaranteed sighting, the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is right here in town; a not-for-profit wildlife park and education centre, open 365 days a year, with admission good for two consecutive days.

Fly Fishing

This is serious trout country. The Madison River runs right past town, the Firehole and Gallatin are close by, and Henry's Fork is a short drive west into Idaho. Hebgen Lake and Quake Lake add stillwater options for brown and rainbow trout.

Summer dry-fly fishing gets the attention, but the winter fishery is quietly excellent too.

Summer Adventure

When the snow goes, the same landscape turns into a summer playground. Within easy reach you'll find whitewater rafting, ziplining and aerial adventure courses, guided horseback riding in the Gallatin National Forest, mountain biking on the Rendezvous trail network, and scenic flights over the park.

In Town, Within Walking Distance

You don't need the car for any of these:

  • The Playmill Theatre — popular musicals and plays staged each summer in an intimate venue, running since 1963 and a genuine local institution

  • Yellowstone IMAX — big-screen park films, and a good rainy-afternoon fallback

  • Museum of the Yellowstone — housed in the 1909 Union Pacific railroad depot, covering the park's tourism history. Seasonal opening

  • Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center — open year-round

Worth the Drive

  • Hebgen Lake — about 12 miles northwest. Boating, paddleboarding, fishing, and good birding along the shore

  • Earthquake Lake (Quake Lake) — roughly 25 to 27 miles northwest on US-287. A 7.3-magnitude earthquake in 1959 dropped 80 million tons of rock into the Madison River canyon, damming it overnight and killing 28 people. The drowned "ghost forest" still stands in the water. There's a free interpretive centre built on top of the slide itself

  • Big Sky — about 50 miles north on US-191, for skiing in winter and lift-served mountain biking in summer

When to Come

Every season here is a different trip. Summer brings full park access and long days. Fall thins the crowds and brings the elk rut. Winter turns the town over to snowmobiles and Nordic skis. Spring is the quietest and, for viewing wildlife, often the most rewarding.
